Thoughts on REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
“The first time we did Wakakirri we didn’t put much emphasis
on reusing at all, but continued exposure to Wakakirri’s guidelines,
philosophies, judging criteria and the materials provided by Eco-Zone
have really taught our school that you can produce winning performances
on minimal budgets. Our last item was made up entirely of borrowed and
reused sets, props and costumes. This year (2005) we again put a lot of
effort into reusing as much as possible. When we sat down and wrote out
the list of things we’ve sourced even we were amazed! We have adopted
Wakakirri’s philosophies in other areas of the school and this often
comes through at our ‘sharing parades’. At these parades we’re
able to reach a wide cross-section of the parent community and educate
them that creative arts activities aren’t about how much you spend,
rather they’re about teamwork, process and the challenge of working
with little or no budget. Our parents have become terrific ‘reusers’
and are only too happy to get in and get their hands dirty to help us
out. We also think that one of the best things about reusing an borrowing
is the fact that it takes so much pressure off us by reducing the amount
of time normally spent on sets, props and costumes, leaving more time
for work on the Story-Dance itself.”
